Bistro J'Taime, 11 Wheatsheaf Yard, Blue Boar St. Tel. 722473 | |
Reviewed Oct 2004 |
I visited the Bistro Je T'aime on a Thursday lunchtime in October with my husband. We had eaten there previously and had enjoyed the food, so in the midst of a pre-Christmas shopping trip, we decided to go again. We were given a warm welcome and shown to a table where we were given menus and told about the set lunch for £8.90 for two courses and £6.70 for one course. These set menus have a choice of eight starters and ten main courses. There is also a very comprehensive a la carte menu which is obviously more expensive. From a very good wine list we chose the house white, which at £9.95 was very good value and considerably better than some house wines that one gets elsewhere. The set lunch menu includes a basket of bread and butter which is more than enough for two people, but if you do want more it will cost you £1.50 for another basket. I chose the chicken liver pate which came with a small portion of mixed dressed salad leaves, cornichons and small pieces of toasted french bread. The pate was delicious and I didn't want it to finish. This was followed by calve's liver and bacon with freshly cooked vegetables, all melt-in-the-mouth. My husband had avocado pear with parma ham - which he said was wonderful - followed by boeuf bourguignon with vegetables which he enjoyed. The restaurant also does a pre-theatre and early diners' menu between six and seven in the evening, with a choice of two courses for £11.90. They are now open on Sunday for lunch too with a good choice including roast beef. The Christmas menu also has a very good choice and three courses will cost you £19.90. The restaurant manager is French, as are most of the staff. If I had to find fault at all it would be the 10% service charge that is automatically added to your bill, and something that I resent. I can highly recommend it and will be going again. Mrs Pat Curtis, 18.10.04 |
