I think this was the best Shakespeare I have ever seen! Not one of the actors appeared to be over the age of 30, and yet their acting was absolutely superb. I thought it was going to be one of those 'modern' interpretations of Shakespeare which worried me when it started. But very quickly, I forgot about analysing the interpretation, and was completely immersed in the story. The way each character handled and moved the chairs, helped me to understand that character better. The dance when Mariana and Angelo were making love was the most moving dance I've ever seen - it spoke to me without ever looking sordid or obvious.
I couldn't fault a single actor regardless of the size of their role - each and everyone of them gave it their all, for every single minute of the play. They could all act without overacting which I think frequently happens with old English plays.
I love Shakespeare and have read it to MA level, but sometimes I need a crib sheet to understand what is going on (I don't usually admit that!). This was the first time since I saw Dustin Hoffman in The Merchant of Venice sometime back in the 1980s that I understood every bit of the play, even if I didn't always understand every sentence.
Well done young team - and director. I will definitely be looking out for an opportunity to see you again.
