Daily Info's Advent Calendar 2019
It may seem a bit chilly to be thinking about gelato, but if you're having a Christmas party, the sumptuous offerings from iScream Gelateria in the Covered Market are a distinctively decadent treat, and a fabulous alternative to figgy pudding. We chatted to Graham Macdonald, General Manager.
Tell us about what you sell
We sell award-winning gelato – made fresh on the premises – and fine chocolate, from around the world but predominately British.
How long have you been going?
We opened just under five years ago
What motivated you to start a business?
I love gelato (or ice cream), and had one every day on holiday, so now that I make it myself, every day is a holiday!
What do you like best about being based In Oxford?
The diverse mix of clientele.
Do you think Oxford is a good place to run a small business?
As a major city on the tourist trail, we get to meet people from all over the world.
What's the best thing about running a small business?
We offer a little decadence, therefore it is seeing people smile!
What’s the biggest challenge?
Being small when the face of the “High Street” is changing so quickly - only the ones who are prepared to adapt to the changes will survive.
What's the most interesting little known fact about what you do, and what's the funniest thing that's happened in the shop?
Most people have no idea I make the gelato fresh every day onsite – I am stuck for the funniest thing but I did try to do an interview with Radio Oxford and went to the station, when the interviewer was waiting at the shop!
What’s your favourite product?
For gelato, it is Pistachio and for chocolate it is Booja Booja hazelnut truffles.
Is there anything else you’d like to highlight?
Jen and I are very keen on saving the planet, and ever since we opened we have been using Vegware products, which include gelato spoons and clear bags made of vegetable starch; and our napkins, coffee cups, gelato cups and carrier bags are all made from recycled paper.
We offer loyalty cards for both gelato and chocolates (so buying four at a time will be worth your while! - DI)
