Tell us about what you sell
We specialise in unique diamond and gem set jewellery, including rare and unusual stones, designer silver jewellery, modern silver & designer gifts and homewares, and 20th-century stylish silver wares. All items are predominately made in the UK.
How long has your business been going?
Since 1790 - we are about to start our 230th year. Currently on the 8th generation of the same Payne family.
What do you like best about being based in Oxford?
The surrounding countryside & relatively close proximity to London.
Do you think Oxford is a good place to run a small business?
Oxford’s residents are particularly switched on and good at supporting local independent businesses but the City & County Councils, landlords and some University Colleges make trading in the city a very challenging, hostile and unattractive prospect.
What's the best thing about running a small business?
Being able to source & stock good quality items that we have a passion for, and being a positive asset to the community.
What’s the biggest challenge?
Getting shoppers through the door; Oxford’s transport system is appalling and almost completely reliant on polluting buses. Many shoppers go elsewhere, to surrounding towns, villages and cities or online to shop.
What's the most interesting little known fact about what you do? And the funniest thing that's happened in the shop?
We offer a bespoke service & we are not an antique shop. Many moons ago one customer removed her jumper to try on necklaces, forgetting she didn’t have another top beneath!
