Cookies for Santa

Food can be such an anchor at Christmastime. Whether it’s mince pies at the Christmas party, a tub of Quality Street at the workplace, the festive sandwich in your meal deal, or perfectly crisp roast potatoes on the big day, flavours underpin the season.

In terms of culinary Christmas traditions, baking a batch of cookies has also stood the test of time, particularly if some are left out for the big man in the sleigh.

Baking cookies for Santa can be the perfect Christmas Eve activity to channel kids’ rapidly building excitement, with the option for icing and decorating cookies or plating as is, depending on interest and energy levels. If the chaos of baking doesn’t appeal, there’s also the option of buying premade gingerbread men and icing pens for a simpler, smoother take on the activity.

But you decide rolling out some dough is the way to go, we’ve attached two great recipes below. The first, BBC Good Food’s Ultimate Easy Gingerbread, comes together quickly and forms an incredibly forgiving dough that can be rolled and sculpted repeatedly without losing its consistency - perfect for creative young chefs.

The second, from Sally’s Baking Addiction, is an incredibly popular and highly rated recipe for an incredibly popular and highly rated cookie type - the classic chocolate chip. You’ll be Santa’s favourite house on the street!
