Advent Calendar 2023

The Wallingford Bookshop & Mostly Books

Christmas is the perfect time for a new read, for yourself and that book lover in your life. And Oxford is lucky to have Blackwell’s. But there are some independent venues worth visiting as well.

The Wallingford Bookshop is in the historic market town. They have 6,000 books in stock plus can order books in for you. And their knowledgeable staff will have plenty of recommendations to help you find the perfect book. Or you can go with their book subscription service, with options for adults, teens and children.

Mostly Books have your literary needs in Abingdon. You can drop in and browse their selection, take a blind date with a book or order the perfect read online. They have events coming up in the new year, so it is worth keeping an eye on their plans. Or you can join their virtual online book club.

And we couldn’t miss out the new family bookshop and activity space, Caper, recently opened on Magdalen Road. Follow them on Instagram for all the latest updates.

A trio of book recommendations from the Daily Info team:

The October Witches by Jennifer Claessen – a beautiful start of a trilogy following a young witch across the month that their powers materialise. Pair it with the sequel The November Witches.

White Houses by Amy Bloom – a fascinating reimagining of American history, Amy Bloom’s novel explores the relationship between Eleanor Roosevelt and their real-life aide Lorena Hickock.

The Last Action Heroes by Nick De Semlyen – a journey into the highs and lows of 80s action movies, following the stars that made them, De Semlyen’s text is rich with humour and details, whilst constructing a great list of films to watch.
