Advent Calendar 2024
The most wonderful time of the year is also the perfect time to head to the cinema, be it to catch something classic or a new blockbuster.
For those seeking the latest releases, there’s the likes of Moana 2, Paddington in Peru and Wicked, which offer entertainment for all and are currently on release. Joining them are live(-is) action sequel/prequel/remake Mufasa: the Lion King (20th December), anime return to Middle Earth Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim (13th December), and Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (27th December), a third romp for the beloved video game character.
Golden oldies can be found in pretty much all Oxford cinemas with seasonal gems a-plenty. At the Ultimate Picture Palace their Kino Kids Cinema Club continues with The Nightmare Before Christmas and The Muppet Christmas Carol. Plus their screenings of It’s a Wonderful Life are holiday traditions for some. Over at the Odeon, you’ve got beloved home invasion comedy, Home Alone, Will Ferrell as beloved man-child Buddy in Elf, and the worst office party and one of the great action films, Die Hard.
The Vue are going all out and also have Elf and Home Alone. Plus Home Alone 2, The Muppet Christmas Carol, Gremlins, How the Grinch Stole Christmas, Love Actually and The Polar Express. Phew! The Polar Express, Gremlins and Elf are all showing at the Phoenix Picturehouse, but you may be drawn by their more adult choices – the melancholic beauty of The Apartment, holiday chills with Black Christmas, the seasonal perfection of It’s a Wonderful Life, or new-for-the-season, Christmas Eve in Miller’s Point.
And for those who want to test their knowledge of Christmas films, head to the Oxford Wine Cellar on Monday 16th for Keeping It Reels last quiz of the year and make it a Merry Quizmas.
