Advent Calendar 2024
Today we encourage you to take a wander round your nearest populated place, be it your close, estate, or village, and just take in the light shows. You could head to Blenheim or Kew for an all out extravaganza but we suggest you stick more locally. For a start, take a walk or cycle at dusk, out of your own front door, and spot your neighbourhood light-lovers. There is bound to be a household of generous souls locally who embrace this opportunity for decoration, or if you’re lucky, a couple who strive to outdo each other in friendly LED-lit rivalry. You could use it as an excuse to make new local connections, or just enjoy the sights.
For a bigger show, and one fundraising for a good cause, head to Poplar Grove, Kennington to see the annual Charity display, run by one kind-hearted NHS supporter. It grows, year on year, and you can expect reindeer, refreshments, elves, assorted wildlife, and this year Santa will be present on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. Bring cash for this year’s good causes, Sobell House and a local children’s respite charity, and embrace the twinkly Christmas magic.
And one for the daytime - this Saturday head along to Oxford City Farm, for their Winter Warmer and last open day of this year. They’re a great urban green space and very welcoming at any time, but this session also has a firepit and singing to enjoy, plus mince pies, hot soup and mulled juice to buy if you fancy it. With many of their autumn events this year cancelled because of one or other sort of extreme weather, this is a great opportunity to catch up, say Merry Solstice to the goats and bid farewell to 2024.
Lights - across the county, anytime it’s dark!
Winter Warmer: Oxford City Farm (Cornwallis Rd), Sat 21st Dec, 10am-2pm, free entry but ticketed
