Advent Calendar 2024
2024 has been an odd year for cinemas. Buffeted by the tail of the pandemic and the repercussions of last year’s industry strike, as well as the continued impact of the rise of streaming, and film fan’s got an odd mix of films. There were good films and bad films, mega hits and painful flops. For every Furioisa we got a Madame Web, for every Challengers, a Megalopolis, for every Hit Man, an Argylle.
But through it all there were dozens of cinematic gems. The year began with award-contenders like Poor Things, All of Us Strangers and The Holdovers – brilliant workers from true auteurs. And then as it progressed there was something for everyone – genre fans got truly out there works like Longlegs, The Substance and Cuckoo, blockbuster sequels like Dune: Part Two, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes and A Quiet Place: Day One all gave truly cinematic sights, and there were many other great watches that made it worth a trip to the cinemas.
Our resident movie guru has picked his films of the year, works you may have seen or those you should keep on your radar. And they’re all perfect for that post Christmas haze, the Crimbo Limbo where the days all seem to blend together. That is if our cinema listings have nothing to tempt you out of the house.
