Pancake Day In Oxford 2022

Flippin’ heck – is it Pancake Day already?!

Pancake Day – AKA Shrove Tuesday – is a great opportunity to feast on pancakes and pancake-ish treats from a range of culinary traditions, so if you’re keen to go beyond the classic homemade lemon and sugar option, take a look at our top picks for this year.

Pancake Day Feasting Session at Silvie (Iffley Road)

This East Oxford café is a foodie’s favourite, with a simple, chic-yet-homespun vibe and, occasionally, the company of a lovely floof of a cat. They are holding an evening of French-style cocktails and crêpes, featuring a small but perfectly chosen selection of sweet and savoury toppings.

Pancake Feasting at Silvie Tues March 1st, 5pm – 9pm. No need to book.

Coconut Pancake Stack at the Handlebar Café & Kitchen (St Michael’s St)

The Handlebar’s brunch menu is one of the tastiest in town, and their coconut pancake stack is a regular highlight. Made with ground almonds, shredded coconut, pea milk, they are gluten free, daily free, and come with vegan topping options (banana and maple syrup, berries with coconut yoghurt and granola) or carefully sourced bacon.

Pancakes at the Handlebar Daily brunch menu available 9am – 3pm.

Authentic Breton galettes at Crêpes O Mania (Broad Street)

For certain members of the Daily Info team the pinnacle of pancake perfection is a good galette – a pancake made with buckwheat. Broad Street is the regular site of Oxford’s Crêpes O Mania van, which serves delicious galettes served with a range of savoury toppings, including La Nordique (smoked salmon, crème fraiche) and La Toulouse (sausage, onion, cheese). As the name implies, they also serve sweet crêpes – and all the flour they use is organic and local. It’s also perfect if you feel more comfortable eating out in the fresh air.

Crêpes O Mania will be in Broad Street on March 1st, from 10am to 6pm.

Oxford In Spires – Build the world (and the pancake) you want (New Inn Hall St)

This year, Pancake Day falls into Fairtrade Fortnight – so if you fancy combining the two, head to the Wesley Memorial Church for a combination of talks and free pancakes. The focus will be on fair trade and the impact of climate change. As you can imagine, all ingredients will be from fair, ethical suppliers, and there will be plenty of food for thought too!

Oxford In Spires March 1st, 6 – 7.30pm. Please let the Oxford Fair Trade Coalition team know in advance if you would like to go to this event.
