2024 marks a very special birthday for Daily Info - we’ve hit the big 6-0! We know, we don’t look a day over 55 (we have a great skincare routine), but it’s true; Daily Info has been bringing you all of Oxford’s goings on for six full decades, ever since John Rose couldn’t wait until the weekend to post an ad in his local paper.
Over the years, Daily Info’s humble beginnings at Rose’s typewriter grew to a printing shed squirreled away on Warnborough Road, and eventually to the sheet and website we know today, never losing sight of its goal to be a publication by Oxford, for Oxford. We’ve got lots planned to celebrate our 60th, and we’d love for you to celebrate with us!
The Daily Info Exhibition with Museum of Oxford
With our sheet in circulation for so long, they’re a fascinating time capsule not just of life in Oxford, but the world at large, over the decades. We’ve teamed up with the Museum of Oxford to archive some particularly notable sheets from days gone by; keep your eyes peeled to find the seeds of student organizing against the Vietnam War, David Bowie gigging for pennies a pop, and dozens of quirky local oddities captured forever in our little sheet, perfect for any amateur historians out there. These can be viewed as part of our digital exhibition with the museum, offering a wonderful snapshot into Oxford and our history.
The Swinging Sixties Film Quiz with Keeping it Reel - 25th September
We’re getting into the swing on the 25th with a sixties-themed quiz organised by the good folks of monthly movie quiz Keeping It Reel and the James St Tavern. The era of beatniks, Beatles and bohemians, the quiz will centre on iconic sixties cinema, with music, picture and puzzle rounds to delight any film buff. Prizes are also awarded for the best team name, so get your thinking cap (and your go go boots) on!
Free Planners at Gloucester Green Market - 27th September
Our shiny new 2024-2025 year planners are now out in the world, and we’ll be at Gloucester Green Market giving them away. There’s truly no better tool to plan your year, with not just national events and religious holidays but term times and Oxford specific traditions marked on the calendar. Come say hi at our Gloucester Green stall and snag the most useful addition to your wall you could want.
Dr. Strangelove (or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb) Screening with the Ultimate Picture Palace - 30th September
1964, the year of Daily Info’s birth, also marks the 60th anniversary of one of the greatest black comedies ever made, Dr. Strangelove (or How I Learned to Stop Worring and Love the Bomb). We’ll be hosting a special screening of Stanley Kubrick’s iconic Cold War satire, featuring three star turns from the late great Peter Sellers, alongside our friends at the Ultimate Picture Palace, one of Oxford’s most beloved independent cinemas. Dressing up is actively encouraged, so turn up in all your Modish glory for a hilarious and harrowing trip to the War Room.
We’re very grateful to all our collaborators and so proud to have forged such a strong connection with our community over the past six decades. If you have any fond memories of Daily Info you’d like to share, please send them to us at [email protected]; we’d love to hear from you!
