The Ultimate Picture Palace has launched a brand new strand showing family-friendly classics every two weeks. They’ve put together a terrific programme of films for 5-11-year-olds that screen in a friendly, relaxed atmosphere.
Daily Info takes a look at what they’ve got coming up over the next two months.
Ernest & Celestine (U) – Sunday 17th November
Based on a series of beloved Belgian children’s books, Ernest & Celestine follows the friendship blossoming between a mouse and a bear. From the makers of A Town Called Panic!, this French classic screens in its dubbed version with a voice cast that includes Forest Whitaker, Paul Giamatti and William H. Macy.
Wallace & Gromit Double Feature (U) – Sunday 1st December
Aardman’s stop motion masterpieces, The Wrong Trousers and A Close Shave, will be showing on the big screen, perfectly timed as we prepare for the duos’ return to screens this Christmas. These two thirty minute shorts pack so much into their run times. A Close Shave is a sweet romance, a Hitchcockian thriller and an action epic, all while introducing the world to Shaun the Sheep. And The Wrong Trousers is an even great achievement – a heartbreaking melodrama and an enthralling heist movie, all with the most evil penguin put to screen and a truly remarkable climatic train sequence. They’re just outstanding shorts.
The Nightmare Before Christmas (U) – Sunday 15th December
Spooky and kooky, creepy and festive, Henry Selick’s The Nightmare Before Christmas is a cult favourite – the perfect film for the season. Who doesn’t want to watch the Pumpkin King of Halloween Town lead a takeover of Christmas? Come for the beautifully horrid character design, stay for the beautiful songs and sweet heart this film has.
The Muppet Christmas Carol (U) – Sunday 22nd December
There is a strong argument that not only is this the greatest adaptation of Charles Dickens’s festive classic but also that it is the greatest Christmas film ever made. It’s certainly a beautiful, heartfelt watch with a terrific turn from Michael Caine amongst the Muppet gang’s terrific antics. And remember we must light the lamp, not the rat.
Song of the Sea (PG) – Sunday 29th December & Monday 1st January
If you’ve never experienced one of Cartoon Saloon’s 2D animated Irish folklore, then now is the perfect time to watch Song of the Sea. This tale follows a brother and sister, who go on an adventure to free the faeries and save the spirit world. This really is a lushly put-together animation.
