Tipped to be a big name for 2015, Rae Morris commanded the stage last night at the O2 Academy Oxford, performing songs from her début album, Unguarded.
Perhaps known best as the backing vocalist on the Bombay Bicycle Club track, Luna, Morris proved last night that she is an artist in her own right. Her voice is huge and well controlled and she skated effortlessly up and down her range last night in a number of catchy, upbeat songs.
The gig was, and indeed the album is, an engaging mix of jazzy, synth-ey tunes reminiscent of Ellie Goulding or Marina and the Diamonds, and more melancholic songs that seem to follow the Tom Odell/George Ezra vibe of 2014.
One of the latter is the track Cold, written by Morris and Fryars - last night's support act - who joined Morris on stage to perform this duet. Having produced some of the album, Fryars was a good choice for a support act and made a gracious effort at warming up a rather stiff, Sunday evening Oxford audience.
Between songs, Morris' Lancastrian accent and endearingly awkward mannerisms served to remind the audience that, amazingly, she is still a 21-year-old young woman from Blackpool, despite her incredible talent and the maturity of her music.
It was fantastic to watch Rae Morris in a venue like the O2. It seems likely that she'll be playing the summer festivals soon so get your more intimate venue gigs booked to be swaying and singing along in the front row.
