No brass band marched on stage so proudly or played with such passion as the Hackney Colliery Band's performance, to a packed audience, on Friday night. The nine-piece band (2 trumpets, 2 trombones, 2 saxaphones, 2 drummers and 1 sousaphone player) played an eclectic mix of music at once jazz, big band, indie pop and hip hop to name a few, and enthralled with a range of tone and musical virtuosity.
This was the opening date of the band's UK tour and the audience were treated to not one but two 'world premieres' during the course of the evening. They opened a little tentatively but soon warmed up led by Mike Lisirge on Alto Sax. The audience were treated to renditions of tracks from their forthcoming album such as 'Rewake' and also, tighter and tauter, renditions of older tracks such as 'Dead Dialogue'.
Each member of the band brought their own musical talent and enthusiasm to the ensemble and each piece was clearly and eloquently driven by Luke Christie's snare drum and Olly Blackman on bass (and my favourite percussion instrument, cow bells). For the most part, Jeff Miller and his sousaphone seemed happy in a world of their own but this belied the integral bass line they laid down driving the horns, trombones and sax. Beyond the band's soloist's musical dialogue with the audience direct repartee was led by Steve Pretty and indeed whipped into action in the second half which concluded with traditional rock concert chanting, foot stomping and hand-waving accompanied by driving rhythms and roaring brass.
Indeed this was a musical tour de force with influences from Brubeck to Zappa – hard to pigeon hole but hugely enjoyable. There is an eloquence and passion which is unique to the Hackney Colliery Band yet deeply rooted in musical tradition. Cornerstone proved to be a great forum for everyone – the band all had room to work and the audience got up to dance along. No-one was brassed off and indeed there was much smiling and laughter as the band marched out and then continued to play in the foyer as the audience marched out happily into the night with trumpet riffs echoing behind them.
