This is a little gem tucked away in the late evening on Radio 4: a comedy sketch show by two new and brilliant writer-performers, Hannah Croft and Fiona Pearce. They have honed a distinctive style and a series of wryly, humorous characters from real life observations. They are excellent live performers, with a growing reputation at the Edinburgh Fringe, and this comes across in their first radio series, presented to an appreciative studio audience. Last night they gave us Abby, the over-enthusiastic and innocent work-experience girl; my favourites, the wonderful June and Jean, WI champions of rhubarb chutney and asparagus mousse; the Geordie Brown Owl from Hell with a great accent and blood-curdling child management techniques; and an excruciating Maid of Honour experience you wouldn't want to witness for real. It was all great writing from these two, the thinking person's French and Saunders. They are bound to become more popular if the series can maintain this high standard. I'm really looking forward to their next instalment on Wednesday.
Catch up on the series here.
