The last Sunday of the month is fast becoming the evening to keep free if you want to hear good acoustic music in Oxford. The White Hart in Wolvercote, now a community pub, is hosting Oxfordshire musicians in a series of free events in the autumn and winter so enjoy a well-kept pint of beer while you listen to traditional and modern music.
Last Sunday Mandolirium (John Somerscales and Rod Craig) were joined by John Winterbottom on bass guitar and delighted us with their virtuosity on guitar, mandolin and mandola, occasionally breaking into vocals too. A wide ranging set took us on a tour around northern Europe as well as the southern United States as we meandered through bluegrass, took a detour with Romanian folk, picked up the tempo with Parisian gypsy swing and cooled down with two beautifully rendered O'Carolan tunes from Eire. John and Rod played a couple of their own compositions too.
Catch Mandolirium at their next gig on Friday 21st at Woodstock Acoustic Club (held at Woodstock Social Club, Oxford Street).
Coming up at The White Hart are Three Pressed Men (October 30th) and James Bell on 27th November. See their Facebook page or website for more details, or keep an eye on the Daily Info's What's On pages .
