The back room of The Bullingdon on Cowley Road is often a place where one might find live music, or stand-up comedy but once in a while a little Christmas miracle occurs and a lucky audience can experience the most glitzy, ridiculous evening of cabaret they didn't know they were craving. With the charming Ginger Tart as the master of ceremonies, we were treated to comedy, burlesque dance, and even a touch of festive magic.
Stand-out performances included a bafflingly erotic personified lampshade dancing impressively to husky German moans and whispers, the sexiest Christmas dinner ever to involve a singing Brussels sprout, and a rather aggressive hand-puppet tearing off her puppeteer's clothing. There was a high energy throughout the room, especially when the audience all pulled Christmas crackers, and with a healthy dollop of cheesy favourite tunes everyone was laughing and singing along in their seats. The performances all had an inclusive, body-positive message (and thankfully a diverse array of bodies on display), empowerment through sensuality and expression through music and movement.
As well as the burlesque staples of stripteases, gloves flung off into the crowd and fan dances, there were also plenty of surprises, such as dance numbers featuring Christmas turkeys, the Vicar of Dibley and by the end of the evening they had even managed to make it snow on stage. The production values were a wonderful touch, with kitsch and inventive outfits, combining traditional balloon-pop teases with unfettered silliness and raucous participation from the audience most definitely encouraged. I was won over by this subversive, feel-good romp and would definitely come back for another helping.
