A refreshing take on a classic story which showcases the flexibility of Shakespeare's prose. The same words at a different timbre, volume or tone can mean so many different things. A prime example is Juliet who in scenes with her nurse and family is a stroppy petulant teenager not the simpering maid so often seen. Setting the play in a post-apocalyptic future works well: the costumes have many traditional elements yet work as post modern; it avoids the need for purity of any given time period and they are stunning. It is unfair to pick out any one actor, the group work well together and it was refreshing to see a large company but I have to admit to being confused when actors multi-rolled. There are some brilliantly choreographed fights - either that or the company is larger than I thought and the rest are in the JR.
We need more live theatre, I urge you to support them and go see it - for one evening you will forget all else and be in Verona.
