I first discovered Lewis and Leigh at The Jericho Tavern last May, supporting Alphabet Backwards, and I loved their set. So when I heard they were back in Oxford touring their latest album Ghosts I had to get tickets. Especially since they were playing in the beautiful church of St John the Evangelist on Iffley Road. I love getting to experience a venue for the first time, and the acoustics of churches are an obvious bonus for any musician, but having previously seen the duo and heard their brand of Americana, I knew that in this setting they would hopefully sound even better.
I arrived in time to catch the last few songs from Me for Queen, the talented singer/songwriter Mary Erskine. I snuck in and sat down, and was immediately transfixed by her beautiful clear voice ringing out to the silent audience. I love a song that tells a story, and Me for Queen's set was full of stories. With a combination of folk and soul, she treated us not only to her pitch perfect voice, but her superb piano playing skills. Not to mention her use of a looper to enable her to accompany herself on cello for her final track, 'White Bike'.
After a brief interval and a chance to wander the halls and cloisters of the church, Lewis and Leigh arrived on stage, apologising for being slightly late due to Lewis (Al) having misplaced his shoes. Donning some fetching blue Nike trainers with his dapper suit, the show had to go on. I knew I would enjoy it, and I wasn't disappointed. As with their support act, Lewis and Leigh can not only sing and perform with breath-taking precision, but they are also engaging in-between songs, which is an art form in itself. Having very recently won two UK Americana Awards for their album and a song from it, 'The 4:19', it's clear that the duo are going from strength to strength in their career. With toe-tapping tales from Mississippi and South Wales, their voices combine to produce a powerful country, rootsy sound. After an encore where they performed their award-winning track amongst the audience without microphones, we watched them leave and continued applauding long after it was clear there was no chance of a second encore. My love for this pair continues to grow, especially now I have their album on high rotation in the car.
