Well wasn’t that a delight?! Accessible uptempo classical music in a grand yet intimate setting performed by joyful and skillful musicians: the Oxford Bach Soloists’ performance of Air on a G String was a resounding summer success.
Let’s start with first impressions. If you’ve not been to New College in summer then this alone would be worth the ticket price. High stone walls with the verdant, blossom-heavy courtyards - the place is just gorgeous. Step into the chapel and further delights await; Epstein’s striking statue of Lazarus stands guard before the high-ceilinged chapel, complete with candles, dark carved wood, stained glass and an imposing statuary. It’s all rather marvelous.
This magnificent, almost imposing setting was quite at odds with the Soloists' light and accessible performance. Bouncy, pacy and exciting, the orchestral renditions were a great deal of fun. The fun of it all was also plainly written on the faces of the musicians and, in the movements, on the face of conductor Tom Hammond-Davies. Hammond-Davies’ sweeping, almost balletic rhythms were quite different from the jerky motions I’ve seen elsewhere. His introductions and explanations were also very helpful. In terms of atmosphere, special mention must also go to the lead violin Sophie Barber, whose intensity of concentration and whole body movement was hard to pull your eyes from and added much to the upbeat feeling.
The music itself was, of course, excellent. Clean, clear and sharp, there was obviously a great deal of talent in orchestra. The choral elements included some impressive multi-group sections which, despite their complexity, didn’t become muddied or indistinct. Though occasionally the grand high ceiling swallowed the lighter solo vocals, generally the vocals filled the space and managed to keep the atmosphere cosy rather than bracing.
The music, the weather, the setting and the enthusiasm of the musicians all came together to produce a great summer experience. The accessible pieces were perfect for the warm summer day and we left with smiles on our faces. My friends and I left excited after an hour feeling happy, bubbly and ready for a pint before dinner. A good time was had by all.
P.s. Bring a cushion.
