I don’t think I will even bother trying to find fault in this fantastic production. From the moment Chris Michael comes out on stage, the sold-out audience were in fits of laughter. Not easy to do in a modern world where words, colour, images and text are what we rely on. From ages 8 to 80, Pegasus Theatre had a typically diverse audience thriving on this silent, black and white show.
Based on Charlie Chaplin’s 1917 film of the same name, The Immigrant is a story for the ages. The idea behind it still resonates and is as apt today as it was in Chaplin’s time. A smiley, brightly coloured man flies home to see his equally colourful grandmother (the only colour you’ll see throughout), in the process losing his return flight, trying to raise funds through different jobs, and falling in love. Over 90 minutes, Chris and his phenomenal female counterparts hilariously fumble about on stage telling a sad story of what happens when there’s a misunderstanding with police, and when you don’t have the right status in a foreign country. Sound familiar? It should, as it happens every day, and depressingly, has been for over a century since Chaplin first brought this to the attention of the public.
But enough about politics for a minute, we need to go back to celebrate the talent of the characters on stage at Pegasus. It was so well presented and acted that often you had no idea if someone had dropped something by mistake or on purpose. Did the kids going to the toilet know they were going to be part of the show? Did the man in the front row know he’d be picked on? As per usual, Pegasus have selected a production that caters to all tastes and although I haven’t visited this fantastic institution for many years, it reminded me why I love their choice in shows so much.
By the time you read this, two other showings would have happened, and I really hope they’re sold out. No matter what mood you’re in, this production will make you laugh and smile like no-one’s watching. I have to give special kudos to the actress who played the grandmother/policeman/homeless man/youth etc, as she was absolutely hilarious. From the funny noises, incredible body language and priceless facial expressions, for me, she stole the show.
Ultimately, I can safely say I would watch anything that Chris Michael puts on or is in. Like I said, I cannot fault this production at all. Well done Chris, Pegasus and everyone else involved. Find this show and watch it now!
