Got a rip in your winter coat that you don't know how to mend? Or a broken lamp that you can't bring yourself to scrap? Don't throw it away - you might be able to get it repaired! Share Oxford are running a Repair Cafe where you can bring broken items to be seen and repaired by volunteers, in exchange for a donation. It's way cheaper than replacing your broken stuff, and much kinder to the planet. This time around, the volunteers mainly specialise in sewing repairs but can also take a look at bikes, electrical, mechanical and tool-sharpening projects. The repairs have a drop-in system but registering your interest in advance will help reduce waiting times and help the volunteers prepare. You're advised to bring along something entertaining in case of queues, but there will be refreshments available to buy to keep you going while you wait!
Share Oxford are a recently-established organisation with an important mission: to reduce waste. They promote a circular economy whereby, instead of treating items as disposable and sending them to landfill at an alarming rate, you can treat your budget and the planet better by avoiding chucking things unnecessarily. Their Library of Things has been set up to help people avoid buying less stuff in the first place: things like power tools or camping equipment, which are only used occasionally, needn't gather dust in your garage, but instead can be hired, so that these tools get as much use as possible. Meanwhile, the Repair Cafes are designed to show how easily wasteful purchases can be avoided.
