Gershwin’s show-stopper musical, Crazy for You, arrived at the Oxford Playhouse on Monday, courtesy of the fantastic Oxford Operatic Society, for a week of excitement, comedy and outstanding dancing! They’ve got rhythm, they’ve got music, they are OXOPS; who could ask for anything more?
From the first notes of the overture, the band was tremendous. Led by Musical Director Chris Payne, they delivered Gershwin’s classics including ‘I got rhythm’ and ‘Embraceable you’ with excellent precision and character, transporting the audience to Broadway even before the curtain had opened.
The musical direction given to the cast was also greatly effective. The choral sound was powerful in every chorus number and flavourful harmonies added an extra layer of zesty jazz! Often something missing from amateur performances, OXOPS were able to create a professional tone thanks to their puissant chorus.
The musical follows the story of Bobby Child, played by the highly entertaining Sam Foster. Bobby travels to Deadrock, Nevada, where he falls in love with a decrepit theatre and with Polly Baker, a young lady who cares deeply for it. Believing that he can save the theatre and win Polly’s affections, Bobby pretends to be the famous Bela Zangler and puts on a show with the local cowboys. With mistaken-identity and slapstick-style comedy, the musical was a terrific night out and was wonderfully performed by OXOPS.
Kerry Hudson’s Polly was definitely a highlight, as her voice was truly enchanting and her solo ballads ‘Someone to watch over me’ and ‘But not for me’ fully convinced the audience that we were watching a professional show. Everything seemed to fall into place as the lighting, backdrops and an adept performer complemented each other exquisitely.
A very strong dance ensemble elevated the show to new heights, with the precision and energy of the Follies Girls being consistently impressive. They tapped their way through song after song, wearing glamorous showgirl attire and cheesy smiles. Every time the ensemble returned to the stage, the audience excitedly waited for another stunningly simultaneous tap number - and we were never let down!
Choreographer Joanne Cook has beautifully blended the dancing with Gershwin’s spectacular score to produce a dazzling cocktail of thoroughly enjoyable dance numbers. Cook has also used the big company very successfully in large dance numbers, to ensure that everyone has their moment to present their fabulous dancing!
Despite a few technical difficulties, OXOPS delivered a sensational opening night with much hilarity created by stand-out performers including Edward Blagrove as the real Bela Zangler, Clare Dovey-Wilson as Irene and the Cowboys Junior and Moose.
All in all, I am 'Crazy for' OXOPS and thoroughly look forward to their next show!
