We'll be bringing music, morris and merriment to your living room, bright and early on May Day, in place of the usual celebrations. Join us to keep this historic tradition going through turbulent times.

Since May Morning can't go ahead in its usual form, we are pleased to offer you the next best thing. Running from 6am, Virtual May Morning will bring together all the creative endeavours the people of Oxfordshire are making to keep the May Morning tradition going through lockdown, to be enjoyed from the socially distanced comforts of your home.

We’re excited to showcase the talents of some familiar faces and community groups who are contributing to a packed line up, which you can access through a live video on our Facebook page, and will include:

The Magdalen College Choir singing the Hymnus Eucharisticus with the traditional bells and prayers (which will also be broadcast by BBC Oxford)
Morris dancing from several Oxfordshire troupes
A spoons tutorial from Rachael Borek and Oxford University Morris
A performance by local musician John Otway
A history of May Day from Tim Healey
A recording from Folk Weekend Oxford
May music from a Welsh folk group
A performance from the Whirly Band
Make breakfast with G&D's!

At 8am we will break for the Horns of Plenty, who are encouraging everyone to throw open their windows, or go out on their doorsteps if it is safe to do so, and join them in a city-wide rendition of Somewhere Over the Rainbow. You can download sheet music for the basic tune, although Horns of Plenty encourage people to embellish and improvise as you please!

We will then round off the morning with a May Morning singalong led by local musician Rufus Quickenden.

Parts of this lineup will also be available on our other social channels, such as Youtube and Instagram, throughout the day.

Daily Info also wants your pictures, comments and stories of how you are spending May Morning in lockdown. Please send your snaps to [email protected] and we will share them throughout the day, or tag your own social media posts with #MayMorning.

Oxford City Council is also encouraging people to get involved, by sharing your own celebrations and memories of previous years' May Days. Spread the word to anyone who might be interested by inviting your Facebook friends to Oxford City Council's official Virtual #MayMorning Facebook event.
