Creation Theatre’s unique, exciting and upbeat experience invites the audience to travel between several areas of Wonderland and get to know the beloved tale of Alice. The audience falls down the rabbit hole in a gripping introduction sequence before proceeding to different video calls to meet various characters, which may sound complicated but is actually incredibly easy to do and the technology is of the highest level. The audience goes to Hell’s Kitchen, visits the Mad Hatter, the Evil Queen, the March Hare and more favourites from the beloved tale before congregating for a Tea Party. Not only do the viewers choose where to visit, the actors also encourage an interactive experience in which the audience turn on their cameras and get involved to whatever extent they wish. In order to fully experience the entertainment, I would recommend switching on the camera, letting go of any inhibitions and fully getting involved with the silliness of the activities!
After meeting all of the characters, the audience and actors join together on one video call, to watch the story unfold further and for some spectators to become participants in the gripping Courtroom scene.
Creation Theatre are experts at using Zoom to its full potential, with slick transitions between backdrops and making full use of stunning visual effects. The experience is unlike anything I’ve ever seen before and I am quite baffled as to how some of the impressive visual effects are achieved! Musical transitions are also used very smoothly with some characters introducing an element of dance to their performances in order to motivate participation and create a party-atmosphere amongst viewers. There is an impressive level of detail in the direction of the Mad Hatter’s Tea Party and the Courtroom scene, whereby different characters are seamlessly switched between and are convincingly in the same room, passing round props as if they are physically together. True to the company’s name, the performance is extremely creative and has clearly been well thought out to achieve the inventive result.
A particular favourite interactive part of the show is the hedgehog race, in which the audience compete in an interactive game and are judged by the vicious Queen of Hearts. But it isn't just the technology which is unique and impressive. Each character is in an enchanting costume with magnificent makeup, using splendid props to enhance their performances. The colourful attire and dazzling backdrops add to the charm of the event, whilst complementing the somewhat peculiar story!
Whether you know and love the classic Alice in Wonderland stories, or you want to discover something original and engaging, Creation Theatre’s Virtual Theme Park is an excellent adventure to get involved in.
