Under the Norman Castle Mound the festivities of the noon time Oxjam happenings burst onto the castleyard platform. Sol Samba blaze with their fiery hot rhythms to a crowd keen to get into a latin groove. Fashion parades offer inspiration of how to style garments typically found in thrift stores and inspires some of the crowd to buy some eye catching items at the auction. The models look swish and no doubt their cutting edge hairdos take their inspiration from Oxford based hairdresser Matthew Clulee who donated goody bags to the crowd.
Before dusk falls The Scarletz perform a soaring R n B track whilst a MC who is a font of interesting facts such as Oxford having the very first Oxfam store links up the entertainment with some witty banter. The spoken word is celebrated by a number of poets and comedians who hold the crowd’s attention well whilst face painting is offered to the children. A happy mellow feeling grows beneath the mound, which is lit like a jem, as darkness falls and World Music bands such as Cyberscribes entertain into the night.
The £10 ticket is a real snip as so many vibrant Artists are presented. The Brickwork Lizards are particularly on form playing pure funky ‘world café jazz’ with their uniquely entertaining lyrics. A Georgian Folk Dancer performs spinning moves. Instruments native to the countries the ticket price goes to help are used during this memorable evening and it is great to think that just the ticket sales from the front row alone have paid for more than 50 Oxfam buckets to keep water clean. Roll on the next Oxjam!
