Roots Reggae All-Dayer
Mother Nature came to assist us, blessing us with a day of complete sunshine. We showed our appreciation, one and all, by generating an aura of joy. We were fuelled by a sweet selection from the Natty Hi Fi Djs, such as Tony Dread, Garvin Dan and Sista Grey, who were embellished by the live saxophone of Sista Ali. This was enhanced further by live reggae, from local band Jamatone, founded by Oxford's long-time reggae rhythm duo, Bassie and Kojak, former backing musicians to the great Teddy Dan. For an hour they presented us with gifts of One Drop magic, interspersed with dancehall rhythms. Songs of their own construction, alongside those built from classic rhythms. Powerful lyrics, delivered by two outstanding vocalists. Believe me when I tell you, they are masters of the One Drop.
Peas and rice and curried goat: culinary delights of Caribbean cuisine, expertly prepared by Taste of the Tropics, whose management always makes a willing donation. Little tigers and super heroes: face painting by the Portuguese artist Antonio Alves who always gives of his skills freely.
A garden transformed by red gold and green décor; the face of Dennis Brown, staring out from publicity and record covers. Children running around, their parents conversing. A day to remember, when that elusive spirit called harmony stepped out from the realm of dreams and became a festive reality.
Before I finish, let me take a moment to give my profound respects to Matt, the landlord of the Chester Arms, for his support and for his generosity. He gave us the space to gather, so we could all learn in unison and contribute. So we could congregate and celebrate each other, on a day to be remembered, as Reggae for a Reason.
