Dedicated to the youth of Blackbird Leys
From the first performance, a song by the truly brave Hannah Graham, those of us who gathered in the Glow Hall in Blackbird Leys for the Grand Finale of the C.D.I. Youth Summer project were treated to a wonderful exhibition by local youth, endowed with potential immeasureable. After the solo, a group effort. For the audience was then treated to a textile parade of tie-dye creations, made by the young people, with the assistance of Lutece Constant, a long-time volunteer on the project; who enchanted us later, with a solo performance of two songs, accompanying herself on guitar. This was followed by a euphoric debut by nine-year old rapper Devantae Patterson, who gave us a rendition of his first recording, which is self-produced. On from this, we were shown a selection of short animated films, based around artwork; which featured the artistry of Ellia Townsend, another young volunteer, alongside Jazmin Hickey and Ella Crane. Knowledge and guidance was provided by Kalum Charles. The evening was interspersed with impressive dance displays by the Ishmael Dancers, led by Ishmael Jackson, dance choreography and photography specialist, on the C.D.I. project.
One of the outstanding highlights, was a live performance by J and Tray, of their self-penned message 'Teenage Life'. Positive lyrics that I think any teenager would be proud of. Later, we were shown the video that accompanies the song; a brilliant package. When Callum Smith, another volunteer, whose speciality is media, presented us with his contribution of two raps, especially the one called Saviour, we knew we'd heard something special. Another outstanding feature of the evening. This was followed by a video presentation, of the Gagettes, Kayda Marshall and Alicia Mederick; young celebrities of the local dance scene, who were choreographed and filmed in and around the Glow Hall. Then Fio Osmani and Elli Townsend, a vocal and drum duo, entered the performance area. A brilliant combination, forming another highlight of the evening. While Fio kept the audience bubbling with his assured delivery, Elli rocked us with her bass drum beat.
So much to say and praise. Like the great impromtu dance displays by the radiant Kyron Anthony, alongside Jamie Furlong and Tray Sam (J and Tray). The Djing skills of Simeon Brown. The way the young people supported each other, clapping and dancing; a camaraderie of joy. The magazine of peer and staff interviews, produced by a journalistic team, comprising Aleah Elliot, Lauren Bone, Luke Elliot, Bradley Green, Kameca Gayle and Caydon Mitchell. The cd of music, featuring songs by Shaquan and Charmalie, as well as Georgie Crane, to name three of the contributors.
Towards the end came three masters of rap. A trio of chanters; Carlos Spencer, Otman Lamzini and Rick Jacobs. A confident performance of uplifting lyrics, interwoven between the three. A performance they will happily remember; that will reverberate and spur them on. Please forgive me those not mentioned; there were so many delights to savour, so many to try and remember.
