Last night's show (30/09/11) - well, it was disappointing to say the least. Half an hour late - then half an hour of warm-up from someone who looked like they had come from Comedy College. The same jeans, sneakers, and shirt that virtually every young male comic now has to wear when they put on their hat as "comedian." The warm-up act - Elis James - was hard to hear (as was Stephen Merchant) so the sound wasn't great. Elis James got very few laughs, and barely interacted with the audience. Not exactly the most promising start. When Merchant appeared on set, it was for a hour and a quarter of fairly egocentric comedy. Although some bits were amusing - I won't spoil this for anyone going tonight - overall it was fairly predictable. The bit at the end where he got two people from the audience to help him out on a sketch was the funniest, as luckily for him, he chose two fairly talented people! My partner laughed a lot more about the jokes about dating and sex - but overall, I suspect Merchant's forte might be in his collaborations with Gervais.
