What a great venue the Burton Taylor is for a young children's theatre show. Small enough for the action to be quite intimate, with space for cushions and beanbags, as well as a few chairs for those adults with weary backs, it also has space to stash pushchairs downstairs, baby changing and a little room for pre- and post- theatre play.
Three of us went to check out Spot - the one man and his spotlight show - one mainly slept through it, but she's 6 weeks old, so don't read too much into that! The other two really weren't sure what to expect...
The adult's verdict - Forget the kids, I was engaged, entertained and engrossed by the somehow lovable spotlight (no, not the dog!) and his comic genius friend Andreas. The 40 minute show (just about the right length for small children) ranged from a beautiful choreographed dance between a spot of light and a man to mime artistry that could stand up well in a silent film of its own. All the children in the theatre were captivated throughout, really caught up as the spotlight went from shy to cheeky and took us from the sea to the sun.The 3 year old's verdict - I really love it! I liked all the colours and it was funny. I touched Spot at the end. Children should go and watch this.
Altogether a really enjoyable way to spend an hour or so - and the topic of conversation and drawings for the rest of the afternoon.
