Valentine's Day: love it or loathe it? Tell us through the medium of poetry!

The moment I laid my eyes on you, I knew it was love at first sight.
It's you that I desire from morning until night.
To revel in your knowledge, so interesting and so fine.
Your intelligence and sophistication matched only by mine.
My mind awakened as I stared longingly at you.
My hands shaking as I touched, 'this love is meant for two.'
We are destined to make memories and have great times together.
To nurture our relationship, guaranteed to last forever.
I know you are the one I'll tell all my friends about.
Your dark, exciting features would leave them in no doubt.
You are my DAILY INFO - OXFORD, my happy ever after.
The only site I'll ever need, let's fill our days with laughter.

 

“I'm not one to say ‘I love you'”
you say, as you look up from the rugby
“But I do, promise, pass me the crisps”

And you're right, and I pass and I make you some tea
and it would be nice if you told me you loved me,
that you wanted to hold me each day.

But it's alright, I guess,
because once a year, you actually show me
with flowers or chocolate –
that others call corporate –
and I know that you love me
from the pre-written card.

Maybe it would be nice
to be spontaneously told
the colour of roses and violets.
Or that I am the best out of
all other girls,
every day of the year.

But if – for you –
the convention of presents
and impersonal cards sent
on Valentine's day
makes it easier to say it;
so be it.

 
The feelings that I have for you
Are really not a joke, so,
If you want to be my Lennon
I could be your Yoko.

And though we are not young or strong
It’s never quite too late
So you can be Petruchio
And I can be your Kate.

And you can whisper all the things
That are meant for me only
And I will be your Cleopatra
You will be my Tony

And though, perhaps, the things in life
May not all turn out rosy
If you’ll be my Napoleon
Then I can be your Josie

And we would be so happy, yes!
Our life would be complete if
You allow me to be Cathy,
You can be my Heathcliffe

And though I have a captive heart
And you are like my gaoler
If you offer to be Burton
I will be your Taylor

And though I know the tales of woe
These lovers have all had
I’m willing to be Angelina
If you’ll be my Brad

It may not last, but if it should
Then love will conquer all
And you will ever be my Bogart
I’ll be your Bacall.

A kiss in the morning,
From rosebud lips.
Tells me you cherish me.
Warm embraces make us one,
Entwined bodies in harmony.
A gift to show you care,
Big or small,
The token that said you were thinking of me.
Candles illuminate the room,
A trail leading to the bed sheet of petals,
Our song whispering throughout.
The poem you wrote called I Love You,
Repeated numerous times.
For me, with you,
Everyday is a Valentine.

The last girl that loved me
Stoned me to death
Previously it'd gotten
Much worse
I've been torn to threads
Boiled and baked and sold for glue
But you seem terrific

A pair of shoes, put away
Washing your clothes, night and day

Never a day with an un-ironed shirt
even though my back does hurt

A hot meal, to keep you strong
When your day has been too long

Keeping you on track
Never looking back

All of the above I do for love

Some days are good, some days are bad
But I know this, you're still my lad

I don't believe I'm right

Sometimes the bricks don't fit the wall

Leave the ‘Zoddie' at 2am
Guess what?
It's raining again
But we're still playing in the park
The Garlic Mayo's washed off of my chips
But you still got some on your lips
And you say,

Hay, I just don't understand
Why you're with this man
I'm thirty eight, you're twenty three
I wanna tell you something right now
And you can have this for free
No one could love you more than me, girl

It's hard as hell some times
Reading between the lines
But please don't ever set me free
Twenty years has now gone past
I still catch me watching your arse
I hope sometimes you notice me,

Here you go my darling,
a single rose for you,
I found it down the market,
as you do,
it doesn't have a smell,
and the petals they are few,
t'was in a bucket round the back,
a florist he had threw,
a week old rose, he said to me,
it would do for some old bird,
I thought of you straight away,
as you dont mind old, so I heard,
I do infact love you,
you might not think that true,
but I will tell you daily
while I'm enjoy a home brew,
the words will come from me,
not the drink inside,
I would tell you this when sober,
will you be my bride.

 
You opened up your house to me
In I came, shoes off and found seat
I smelt your scent and tasted you
As if next year we would not meet.

Sat with what if's and will we's
Within the drafts through windows and doors
Oh valentines, valentines, valentine
Softer than lovers lips
Mightier than all the courts
Your pulse never weakens
Vitality and openness
If we choose, not ours
But always yours.

In the world where I first met u, I never thought it will be just us to,

When you take my hand on valentines day, I look into your eyes and say,

I love you more and more each day, I'll never ever leave your side,

When times get tough I will stay and fight,

And now the day has finally come,

I have to say I love you because the poem's done.

i love you within the lines of a vaguely written contract clause.
we are last week's tide table used to predict next month's high tides.
there is little of the sea in my blood; have i told you
about the time i got hypothermia in new zealand?
let me list the times i have missed your cheekbones: always.

 

To love you I know now is not a crime
Thinking of you 24/7 all the time
We could had have had it all if it was not for others
All of them getting in the way sisters and brothers
I have lost you now you belong to him
I will never disrespect nor live in sin
Close as it was we were never meant to be
In time you will see what i see
Never has a girl affected my heart
Never did i think we would miss being apart
I remember those long nights
Now such a distance out of sight
If only our paths would have crossed before
Only thing left now is to close the door
In time i know it will heal the pain
How could i let my heart go insane
Nothing but best wishes for your life
Now that you are his wife
I hope it will come again this feeling love
I hope it never comes again if it hurts this much this feeling love

 
I met Tyler when I was four,
He was, quite literally, the boy next door.
The summer was long, the pavements scorched,
It was swings and sandpits and games on the porch,
Transformers, hopscotch, sprinklers, bikes,
Ice pops, trees, mosquito bites.
Our tiny knees were dirty and bruised,
We smooshed fat caterpillars until they oozed.
Another life, a time of joy.
I wonder what happened to that boy.
 
Timothy was an inexplicable crush.
At seven years old he made me flush,
Just by walking past, or joking with a friend.
I'd decided that our love would transcend.
So I went home and told my mum,
She must have known this day would come.
We sat in the kitchen and made a start,
At a Valentine's card that would melt his heart.
The day finally came, I gave the card to him:
He looked at it, then me, and dropped it in the bin.
 
Later on, aged eleven, I met a boy called Mark,
This time I'd wait for him to make the first remark.
Finally he whispered a message for my friend to transmit,
She came over and told me "Mark thinks you're fit".
I flirted a bit - but not too much. I waited ,
Finally he pulled me close, my breath was bated.
"With tongue?" he asked and I called him a pervert,
But he tried anyway, and it didn't hurt.
All in all, it was hit and miss,
But there it was, my very first kiss.
 
Then love hit me between the eyes,
This boy was my sun and moon and sky.
Harry and I had met at school
We were best friends, and it was cool.
My heart was full like a fat kid's belly,
He made me feel like rainbows, and kittens, and jelly.
But we were very up and down
We both cheated, we both acted the clown.
No one knew if we'd be on or off each day,
And I wasn't too surprised when he turned out to be gay.
 
Just after school, I met Matt.
In a pub, we kissed, we had a chat,
We travelled, we drank, we smoked, we lived,
We talked about when we'd have kids.
Time went by and life moved on,
Uncertainty and passion were long gone;
But in its place was love and we knew what was ahead,
We did the obvious thing, and wed.
Unfortunately, we'd long ago run our course,
And with great regret, we got divorced.
 
Life and love weren't what I'd expected
My heart and mind were disconnected.
My past and my misconceptions that bound me,
Were blown out of the water, when again - love found me.
It feels as though everything has come together,
For richer or poorer, whatever the weather.
I might be wrong, and never say never,
But I think this guy is the one - forever.
But more to the point, over and above,
I've learnt some things about this thing called love:
 
Love isn't perfect, it isn't a show
It isn't always forever, but when you know, you know.
Choose February 14th or choose any 24 hours,
Make a date, send some flowers,
Call me old fashioned, my view may be slanted,
But loved ones should never be taken for granted.
Show your friends, your family, your beau, and your cat,
That you utterly love them, and that is that.

When I think of
How we met, and the chances
Of that meeting turning (eventually) into our

Wedding day.
A honeymoon in Malta, swimming in the Med
Noshing on local food
Taking in the
Sights, the sea, the smells,

The newness of
Our new (Facebook!) status.

Coming up our fifth month of marriage, whilst
Others haven't started this "love thing" yet
May we all remind ourselves, that beyond commercialism
Everyone just wants their own version of romance, and a (screaming?!) Oh!

Love is easy yet love can be harder
Love is fine yet love can be murder

Real love hurts and yet so does false
Hear your heart break when you let someone close
Nothing prepares you for the free falling feeling
leaving your senses all rocking and reeling
That's why I'm blessed to have found something great
I've found you my love, my heart, my lifelong soul mate

Various emotions collide

At the moment when I wake

Laid across the king size bed without you by my side.

Each memory is a heartbreak, while

Loneliness

Another leaf has fallen dead,
On the muddy rain-soaked ground.
There is a place I’d be instead,
I’d rather hear a different sound.

I’d rather be inside our chapel warm,
And look at your smile that’s full of pearls.
For this place, it holds no harm.
I can slowly watch the time unfurl.

I saw you last Sunday,
And I wonder when I’ll see you again.
It is only Monday,
The forecast for the week shows darkness and even more rain.

For my life is like a flight,
On the wings of a raven,
Splitting the air in silent nights and misty days,
Searching for the promised safe haven.
