Being at Rosie Wilby's show tonight was like being invited to a lovely dinner party by a friend of a friend. She was, by turns, charming, witty, insightful, dull, funny, embarrassing and above all interesting.
The rest of the audience was hard to judge but I'd say most of them had already self identified as feminists, so it was a nice surprise not to be hectored/lectured. Instead we took a personal look at an early 90s coming of age story through the lens of a 'collective' of students publishing a feminist magazine at university.
Chatting, storytelling, video and a couple of songs led us through just under an hour of anecdotes and a detective story to track down some of the narrator's contemporaries (most of whom turn out to be married, to men).
Another great small show at the BT, where I've seen more of this sort of comedy/storytelling than theatre recently. I'd have maybe liked a couple more songs and perhaps a resolution to Rosie's story not just her erstwhile co-editors, but a tenner and an hour later I feel like I've been invited to laugh and made to think a bit. Pretty good for a Friday night.
