We were treated to a brilliantly presented concert of solo piano music at St John the Evangelist church on Iffley Road. The venue is one of the most comfortable and welcoming in the city - not that it was required today, but there is even under-floor heating! And it was disappointing to see that, with so much else going on in Oxford, the audience was by no means full.
Lazaridis has already had an extraordinary career at his mid-thirties, showing an extraordinary roster of appearances and prizes, much teaching and composition, and a committed involvement with the cultural life of his native Greece.
The Steinway sounded magnificent, and it was employed to the full extent of its considerable voice by this fine pianist. Putting a piano in the centre of a church can be a troublesome exercise in terms of sound projection, but it works well here, and does not wallow in the substantial space.
Schubert's Wanderer Fantasy began the concert, a well-known but hugely demanding piece which reputedly, the composer was unable to play himself once completed. It was handled effortlessly and powerfully here, and was an astonishing opening.
Lazaridis presented three elements of his own suite, illustrating the characters and scenes of Homer's Iliad. The lessons and examples from his study of Schubert, Schumann and many others are evident in these sensitive, well-crafted pieces.
After the interval, the pianist took a moment to collect himself at the piano, before launching into the half-hour tour de force of Liszt's Sonata in B Minor - an insubstantial name for a very substantial piece, in terms of mood, dynamics and structure. It covers the gamut of Liszt's characteristic fire and anger, to gentle and romantic emotion: the last of Lazaridis' own pieces, depicting a battlefield from an ordinary soldier's perspective, set the scene for this rather well.
An encore of Rachmaninov Prelude in C sharp Minor ended a powerful and very involving concert.
