In the winter of 2001 performance poet and compere Sparky, The Dangerous Poet, started his legendary 'Sparky Flying Circus' open mic night in The Half Moon under the stewardship of legendary landlord Joe Ryan. In those early days the event was entirely unplugged so the venue was particularly suited to Sparky's style of vocal delivery and audience participation. Over the next 20 years some of the finest musicians, singers, poets, comedians and performance artists have entertained the late night drinkers of East Oxford and the event has developed into sometimes raucous late night party atmosphere while also welcoming and nurturing new talent. Performers are now rewarded with a free drink (and given the relative luxury of being able to use the pa system). Sparky's Flying Circus usually has extended sets by 2 featured artists and the rest of the night is open to anyone who wants to perform.

The legendary Sparky's Flying Circus is one of the best and funniest nights out and it's free!
From musicians (guitar, flute, violin, pick axe handle - HONESTLY!!) to poets and comedians. It also has good well kept ale! I shall keep coming back for more!
