This is a delightful and thoughtful film, one of the best to come out of Brazil in years. It explores the contradictions of live-in maids, who despite their central role in most Brazilian middle-class families, are ignored and invisible both in real life and in film. The depiction of the housekeeper is well observed, and there is not the heavy signposting of moments of significance typical of Brazilian telenovelas (and much Hollywood output too).
