Apollo 13 meets Robinson Crusoe, nicely if somewhat naively done. A sharp script with lots of early American utilitarian wisdom and a hugely engaging performance from Matt Damon as the likeable astronaut accidentally abandoned by his crew-mates on Mars and subsequently involved in a desperate struggle to survive until he can be rescued. Lots of stomach-churning technical detail about what you need to do to grow crops in a barren dusty wasteland; equally lots of heart-warming can-do optimism. Ultimately a feel-good movie very much in the Gene Roddenberry mode - all races and all peoples would really like to cooperate and work together if only their dastardly governments would let them. Undemanding but good fun, well worth a tenner.
