Set in the Yunnan province of south west China in 1938, war is raging with Japan and not going well. With supply lines cut China's only hope of survival is to build a new supply road as a lifeline for the Chinese People.
Wang, an engineer from Beijing, is sent by the Government to the hills and mountains of south west China to seek the cooperation of villagers in delivering their part of this feat of construction from the Burma to Kunming. However, Wang discovers that this rural area is not only sacred terrain to the local tribes but it is so mountainous and forested that it is virtually impossible to cross.
All the young men have gone off to war and two rival villages must somehow be persuaded to cooperate on the road construction. Just to complicate matters further, the daughter of one village chief falls in love with Wang, causing further inter-village rivalry, whilst a mysterious bandit and his gang cause unease for the locals
Will the villagers survive a deadly encounter with Japanese spies and how will Wang find a way to accomplish a near impossible task?
This is a fictional tale based around the true story of the construction of the Burma Road just before the Second World War began. Over 200,000 were involved in the construction of the Yunnan section alone.
Stunning mountain and forest scenery are well shot and assist in the delivery of a super story well told. The lead performances and character development are nicely done and this was a thoughtful and uplifting tale of the power and will of the human spirit.
