Trainspotting fans will immediately recognise ‘that’s easy for you to say, Diane’ Kelly MacDonald (who made her debut in Danny Boyle's Brit hit) stars in this puzzling film. Puzzle is about a mousey woman, Agnes, who gets a jigsaw for her birthday and soon finds herself competing in the world competition of this pastime. But first we get a glimpse of her sedate life as she cooks and cleans non-stop for her family.
As we watched this strange film unfold I thought maybe they’d show some sleight of hand puzzling but sadly no. The religious, quiet mum is next thing having easy lies tripping off her tongue about a sick aunt as she makes endless trips to the city to meet fellow puzzler Robert (Irrfan Khan). An unlikely love soon blossoms between these two - even though all they seem to do is platonically complete jigsaws together.
The whole film didn’t add up for me, particularly as the love affair felt ridiculous and unbelievable. Yet there are some funny moments scattered among the ludicrous romance and jigsaw pieces.
