Oh boy! Firstly if you have booked babysitters to go and watch this film, it'll be an expensive evening. Went to the 8-15 showing and wasn't done till 11!
Film and story jumped around so much it chopped up like Gefilte Fish!
The story meandered around three time zones.... Matt Damon's character at Yale, the end of World War II and finally the main part of the story concerns the CIA's abortive involvement with the Bay of Pigs incident in Cuba in 1961.
Confusing? Certainly was. You need to pay attention, remember everything that's said, and above all trust no-one.
The film's central theme is trust, and being at the heart of the CIA meant trusting no-one....maybe a metaphor for the USA's deep distrust of everyone outside their shores. That means the early origins of the CIA depicted in the film have a decidedly racist feel.
Matt Damon's character (Edward Wilson) visits a small time Italian born crook (Joe Pesci) in Miami and tells him unless he co-operates with the CIA in a plot against Castro he’ll have him deported.
The crook, scornful of the CIA says something like.
"We Italians we have our love of food, The Irish have a love of their homeland, the Jews have their traditions, hey even the niggers have their music...but what have you got?"
Edward Wilson says:
“We have the United States of America. The rest of you are just visiting"
Enjoy!
