I’m not a political animal, and I have never felt the urge to get off the sofa and “to stick it to The Man” (as Jack Black would say). But this film changed the way I look at contemporary British (and international) politics. The film itself is entertaining, with a great score (soundtrack) and engaging animation sequences. It cleverly and succinctly guides us through the mountain of evidence that, over the last 10 years, Blair et al. have spearheaded an insidious elimination of our civil liberties (thereby contradicting most of the internationally-agreed laws on human rights). Of course, the erosion of civil liberties in the UK was not invented by Blair’s government. In fact, the film revealed some rather startling facts concerning Sir Winston Churchill, particularly his abolition of habeas corpus and his forced introduction of I.D. cards in WWII. Any of this sound familiar? (it should!).
This film took me on a roller coaster ride through much of the gamut of human negative emotion....fear, depression, shame, disgust, anger.... but finally (and importantly) hope. I have no doubt that the filmmakers had an agenda. So, whilst the film is less than impartial and objective, it nevertheless served as a very welcome ‘wake-up call’. What worries me is that no one I know has seen, or is talking about, this film. I am not sure why this is so, but it should be compulsory viewing for every UK resident! Indeed, I left the pleasant, cosy surrounds of the Phoenix Cinema with a determination to stick it to The Man whenever I next can!
