Bourne returns slightly before where we left him at the end of The Bourne Supremacy, on the run and still suffering from amnesia. After reading his own story in The Guardian, Bourne comes out to talk to reporter Simon Ross (Paddy Considine – Hot Fuzz) but not before Ross had triggered attention from the CIA and Langley resulting in a great chase through Waterloo station. Assets (Government assassins) are soon on Bourne’s tail again as he pursues the truth about his past. With flashback memories leading Bourne all over the globe, a variety of CIA trained agents follow to ensure the protection of Treadstone’s replacement codename: Blackbriar. Carnage is left in their wake leaving you to wonder exactly how many times you can ram a car into other vehicles and it still function.
Like all good trilogies we were hooked after the first film, a little confused but content that all would be answered later after the second and eagerly anticipating the third. The Bourne Ultimatum does not disappoint. Believable, high speed action from start to finish. Damon is once again excellent which has to make you question where Parker and Stone got their character inspiration from for Team America: World Police! Damon is superbly supported by David Strathairn who gives a Pacino-esque performance as the aggressive US Government Official Noah Vosen, trying to pin Bourne for the failings of his department. Joan Allen returns as Pamela Landy whose belief in Bourne is tested when faced with her own ultimatum whilst she opposes Vosen’s methods. Julia Styles is back again although disappointingly not in such a leading role as trailers may have implied.
Paul Greengrass directs remaining true to his form in The Bourne Supremacy. Hand held cameras create a sense of panic and urgency in action packed scenes, although they do, on occasion, make you wish they would hold still for a second to let you catch up. The car/scooter chases are fantastic and leave you waiting for the extras on the DVD to see exactly how they managed it.
If you loved the first two films this will not disappoint. If you enjoyed the first but felt let down by the second you will be happily satisfied - and if you haven’t see any of them yet what have you been doing? Get down to your local DVD rental and make a day of it, you won’t regret it. The Bourne Trilogy is one of the best since the original Star Wars Trilogy!
