Ah... so nice to see a Hollywood comedy being... so not like a Hollywood film - like all good Hollywood films are (does that make sense? Yes it does, well hopefully!)... very French somehow... that lunch scene outside could be coming from a Claude Sautet film (mixed with François Ozon perhaps) and one gets a real feel of L.A. for those who know the place (the way the Mexican gardener is treated is quite typical of the place I can tell you, unfortunately), very arty, independent film style. I thought about Cassavetes (the way Annette Bening was filmed at times, these slightly control-freak mad ways she had, can't remember which film sorry, also of course the L.A. of Columbo).
I remember being extremely in love with a previous film Ms Cholodenko did, it was called High Art and already was about lesbianism. It was a great film yet so sad (tales of drugs, and high art indeed but death also!) that it is lovely to see the same director go for a more positive note! (I cannot say really that the series L word - one episode being made by Cholodenko, presents a very positive note about lesbians...). And the film somehow is not about lesbianism, it's about a family, about raising a family, about dealing with everyday routines and difficulties and about people making mistakes. It is the story of Nic and Jules, two women being together and their two kids they got through a donor and one of the two kids' desire to meet the sperm donor. Great performance from all actors, especially Annette Bening and Julianne Moore. Great subject and ways of dealing with it. Merci :-)
