Kazuo Ishiguro, the author of the novel on which Never Let Me Go is based, said two particularly interesting things in the Q&A session after this preview showing. Firstly, he described his books as being concerned with how people accept and bring dignity to their life situations. His characters are stoic, heart-wrenchingly so at times, and all the more beautiful because of it. And as in Remains of the Day, another Ishiguro novel, Never Let Me Go is about how people understand the confines of their lives, and the tides of emotion that run just beneath the surface. It’s a wonderful film, faintly melancholic but never maudlin, with the three leads faultlessly believable. I left wanting to re-read the book.
And the second interesting thing that Ishiguro mentioned? Apparently, test audiences in the US had left thinking that the events of Never Let Me Go actually happened. You’ll have to go watch it to appreciate that one, but it does suggest that Production companies probably shouldn’t always listen to test audiences.
