Loose Cannons (Mine Vaganti) is a light comedy from Italy about coming out and could be compared with Pourquoi Pas Moi (for its Southern atmosphere and high bourgeois milieu), or even La Cage aux Folles, for its camp moments. One could think also about one of last year's best films I am Love (Lo Sono L'Amore) for its portrayal of a successful business Italian family, but this time this is light and this is not also what I could call an "art" film.
What a great pleasure to hear and to see! Italian from the South with all its music. There are operatic moments straight out of Mozart's Cosi fan Tutte and Le Nozze di Figaro ensembles, or one could almost hear at times, the aria of La Calumnia by Rossini! Without going into the North / South clichés about Italy, the atmosphere is quite different between the two regions and visual language is sometimes as important as words if not more!
A good ending also, because this film is also about NOT coming out and goes beyond the either gay or straight. It is about exploring other possibilities such as open relationships and bisexuality, in all honesty. A light comedy worth seeing for any lover of the Italian language, or clothes, or food, or architecture or... etc... etc...
