For the most part, this is a well-produced movie version of the first half of Stephenie Meyer's increasingly bizarre final Twilight book, up to the point of Bella's 'turning'. Only the scene involving giant werewolves sharing their thoughts with one another was actually too silly to tolerate. For the rest, Pattinson, Stewart and Lautner were their usual attractive selves and suffered with conviction.
The movie is not going to arrest the falling birth rate. The special effects used to make Kristen Stewart appear to lose half her body weight were spectacularly good. Vampire films as always contain images of current anxieties, and contemporary woman's suspicion that fetuses are actually vicious parasites that will suck the life out of you is here amply justified. The climax of the film was superbly done. Really pretty enjoyable on the whole - think I'll go again.
