I read a very PC review which went on about Uncle Tom and how various scenes were patronising to black people etc. and thought that was a very sour view of a thoroughly enjoyable film. It is a bit corny in places but the great performances, good script and touching story story easy outweigh the minor niggles.

Funny, irreverent, and entirely human drama/comedy, surprisingly based on a true story. At the simplest level, it's about how someone with a severe disability still wants to be treated as a person, not a condition. At the same time, it is exploring the complexities of class relationships, but with a light touch. It is laugh-out-loud funny in places. Hollywood would have taken the same story and ruined it, French cinema does not let me down. Loved it.
