I often hear stories from friends about their unhinged colleagues, who make Meryl Streep in The Devil Wears Prada seem angelic. Surprise hit Horrible Bosses was a humorous take on terrible managers, and gag-filled lad comedy Horrible Bosses 2 stretches the material into a sequel.
The film opens like an episode of The Apprentice or Dragon's Den, with added innuendo. Best friends and wannabe entrepreneurs Nick, Kurt and Dale (Jason Bateman, Jason Sudeikis and Charlie Day) demo their ridiculous “shower buddy” product live on TV. Even though the launch is a cringe-inducing disaster, not-quite-angel investor Bert Hanson, played by Oscar winner (!) Christoph Waltz, orders 100,000 units. Or so the trio think, which leads to their bankruptcy and a slapdash kidnap plot involving Bert's obnoxious son Rex (Chris Pine).
For a movie about bosses, it's rather odd that this lacks the direct worker/manager dynamic, though it does feature stand-out cameos from the first film. Jennifer Aniston plays nympho-dentist Julia, still intent on seducing hapless Dale. Cue lots of sex gags. Thesp Kevin Spacey is almost unrecognisable as a shouty convict and Nick’s ex-boss.
If you get a kick out of in-your-face visual humour sprinkled with swearing, Horrible Bosses 2 will bring the laughs. This is a comedy similar to The Hangover and Bridesmaids, but lacking originality. It's not usually a good sign when the end credit outtakes are more entertaining than scenes in the actual film, but if you're looking for a frothy and star-studded movie to watch with your mates, then it’s worth a shot.
