In a light and lofty building, Mill View Garden Centre Coffee Shop is a very straightforward place to come for lunch. The food is no-frills cafe fare. Our party of five ate scampi and chips, tuna sandwiches, a jacket potato with cheese on top and beans on the side, and ham, egg and chips. All meals were simple and tasty, and the request for the exact construction of the potato met with no problems. Food is inexpensive in a way that's hard to find round Oxford.
The herbal tea and cakes seem to belong to a different cafe, being lavish and exotic. Teas are served in cafetieres, soyou can see the beautiful swirling bits of fruit and leaf, and that it's made from real ingredients. It's like Teapigs tea let loose from the confines of the bespoke pyramidal bags. The coffee was excellent. And the cakes - a veritable sea of glass domes cover a wide variety of very homemade looking bakes.
It's clear people come just to have tea here and meet for a chat, and if you want a steep uphill walk out of Wheatley you could do worse than reward yourself with sustenance before heading home. I could even imagine coming to write or study during a quiet period, with endless coffee and cake. I don't get the impression there was wifi, but then hey - no distractions! We just needed fuelling before meeting the Birds of Prey, and it did the job admirably.
