Oxford's Grill is firstly a silly name for this restaurant. Though they do grill various ingredients the name conjures up images of big grilled breakfasts and gammon steaks and so on. None of which is served here. They serve Turkish and Mediterranean food and Turkish Grill would be a better name though perhaps still not perfect. However, I'll forgive this error of judgement – much the same as I don't mind the occasional typos on the menus (like the “glass of vine” on offer).

The restaurant is bright and breezy with a nicely laid out dining space with plants and decent/interesting art on the walls. It is – in short – nothing like one might imagine from the outside signage or the silly name (incidentally many moons ago this was the second branch of Joe's Bar & Grill as still found in Summertown).

The food here is quite simply delicious. Beautifully presented by gracious hosts, sometimes the wait can be a little too long but it's a perfectly nice place to be sat waiting. There is also a small paved garden at the rear of the restaurant.

The set menu deal is phenomenal value. Two courses for £6.95 during the day or £10.95 in the evening. The evening version comes with a free glass of wine.

Once seated and given menus the drink orders are taken as one might expect (good selection of tea, coffee, wine, cocktails, spirits and juices including a pretty hard going traditional yoghurt drink – Ayran. Note no beer/ale/cider is on offer) and then a basket of delicious warm pita pieces and hummus is offered as a complimentary – excellent.

On my latest visit I had Cop Lamb Shish (marinated lamb skewers) which was beautifully seasoned and presented and very tender. My companion had a chicken dish, equally lovely.

For mains I had the lamb kofte which was three small lamb burgers, a side salad and a dome of the most tasty rice imaginable, like everything seasoned to perfection. Divine. My companion opted for the Chicken Shish as a main, a long line of tender grilled chicken with the delicious rice and side salad. The food is fairly simple but the care and attention given to such fulfilling and delightful food makes this a truly awesome place to be.

This is a review from a seasoned restaurant eater... (For better and hopefully not for worse...) Oxford's Grill restaurant, I have to confess, is a fabulous find! The chef has routinely outdone himself in Mediterranean and Turkish dishes, the staff were welcoming, and the drinks were authentic, and we packed some wine away with us.

A criticism is the "Rustic interior", quite basic tables and chairs, but being charming at that, it only enhanced a "Mediterranean countryside break in Oxford" feeling at the dinner. And, it wasn't a shame to invite my visitors from London and Cambridge, but quite the opposite. Coming back soon when another occasion arrives, particularly while the budget permits to pay £20-30 for a celebratory dinner.

This restaurant is located conveniently close to Oxford City Centre and the University, to be found at the start of Cowley Road. Recommended. Submitting this review out of admiration, but on my own risk that next time I want to visit it may be packed!!! Recommended.

Not only was the lunch we had at Oxford's Grill fresh and delicious but it was very pretty too - the chef obviously takes great pride in quality food beautifully presented. Friendly, unobtrusive service and excellent value.

It looks a bit suspect from the outside decor, but the food inside is absolutely beautiful. We had tapas that were better than other nearby and overpriced establishments, and tender morsels of spiced grilled lamb as a main. Along with an easy drinking glass of red, and all for about £10 each.

Did I mention the Spanish waitress was also a delight?

It's the most enjoyable culinary surprise on the Cowley Road. Thank God the unpretentious storefront keeps the Magdalen Arms crowds away!

Absolutely SUPERB!

Food is generous and tasty but not cooked on fat oils and similar stuff.

I have a pretty delicate stomach, I easily puke due to different intolerances (I'm celiac and cannot eat beans as well) but the cook managed to adapt the dishes to my needs and it was amazing!!!

The service is excellent, I went there on Saturday and the two waitresses, though pretty busy, always served us kindly and did not let us wait long for drinks.

I ordered from the dinner menu (only £10.95!) and the glass of house wine included is very nice, not rubbish from cheap maxi retailers. They serve you homemade hummus with homemade warm bread as an appetizer as well... at the end of the meal I was sooo full but my friends convinced me to take kazandibi, which I strongly recommend to people having my same dietary problems.

I like reviewing restaurants since I moved here, I believe that this valuable place shall be enhanced and supported against junk food chains!

Had dinner here on a rainy night when we couldn't be bothered going further up the Cowley Rd.

What a wonderful surprise! I'm glad to see the reviews below, because I'd never heard of the place and it deserves to be better known. It's a little bit tucked away next to Coco and Kazbar, after all.

I haven't eaten food like this since being in Turkey. Authentic, cheap, and very very tasty. We loved it.

The Turkish sausage was spiced but not spicy; it had a light, delicate flavor that built to a dense, flavorful crescendo.

We also ordered the Inegol Kofte, a minced spiced lamb. While I've had kofte at Greek restaurants, this was a little more special: small meatballs with a subtle, full flavor.

While the calamari itself was good but not special, the sauce it was served with was a delight. I'm not sure what made it different from a typical tartar sauce, but it was.

The Sigara Borek - filo rolls stuffed with feta, spinach, and parsley... I have never heard my mother speak more highly of a dish.

She said things like "I could die right now and go to heaven" and "I would order this for my last meal."

I ordered the Cop Lamb; tender, marinated cubes of lamb grilled to perfection. I adore lamb, even though I don't get to eat it very often, and this lamb was potentially the best I've ever had.

Finally, we ordered a Beef Carpaccio to share. According to dad, it was the best he'd ever had. I'm inclined to agree. It literally melts in your mouth (and I do not use the word "literally" lightly!). When I move to my dorm room on the other side of town, I will venture to this side of Magdalen Bridge specifically for that dish.

When we finished, we were full but not stuffed, so we ventured to the dessert menu, deciding on the crème brulee. It was beautifully caramelized, subtly sweet, and served with a delicious sauce that I believe was currant.

The service was warm, attentive, and unobtrusive.

We spent most of the meal rhapsodizing over the food; we agreed that it was in the top ten we'd ever had.

We went to Oxford's Grill to eat last night, curious to see what had replaced Joe's Cafe.

What we found was excellent and cheap food in generously sized portions. We were given flatbread and hummus free on arrival, and had Turkish sausage/Liver fried with spices/raita as starters and Lamb Shish and Iskander (a house dish consisting of different types of meat on top of tomato-soaked cubes of bread) as mains. Everything was excellent including the service. It's worth trying the Cankaya, a dry, spicy Turkish white wine as well. Finished off with excellent Turkish-style coffee.

Highly recommended.

Do not be put off by the sign (on a rather unbecoming shade of red which makes it look cheap) of the new Turkish Mediterranean restaurant "Oxford Grill" at 21 Cowley Road. The interior décor is very pleasant.

The food is excellent and the portions very generous.

There is a good web page, you can mute the music if you do not like it.

I have been twice with different friends and they have been pleasantly surprised as how good it is. We plan to return and let other people know!

Really delicious fresh food, but extremely slow service. At the beginning of the evening, we were approached twice by a waiter before we had had a chance to read the menu (and being hungry, we were concentrating on the menus and not on conversation!). However, it was then difficult to find someone to take our order, and it continued this way for the rest of the evening. Both the starter and the main course took a very long time to arrive, and we stared at our finished plates for a good 20 minutes before deciding to go and pay the bill at the desk, since there was no waiter in sight - and fortunately, we didn't want dessert or coffee. The restaurant wasn't busy, and although we saw several different waiters during the evening, the other diners appeared to be having the same problem. In future, I would probably choose to use them as a take-away instead of eating in, as the quality of the food far exceeded that of the dining experience.

We made our first visit here last night. We were served some olives, and bread and houmous on arrival and the menu came promptly.

I had the Greek Sausages Starter and my partner had the Mezze Platter. Both very good with a lovely variety on the mixed platter. For main course I had the Lamb Shank and my partner had the Iskender. Both were excellent and everything was well presented. We accompanied the meal with a bottle of house red (Spanish Tempranillo) and that was perfectly good too. It was nice to get a jug of tap water and glasses too with no fuss.

If I could make one recommendation to make things even better I'd say the lamb shank could probably have spent a bit longer with the sauce before it was cooked - the lamb and the sauce were both great but they didn't taste like the had known each other for very long!

Service was good, prompt and polite and it was nice that the chef came out to check everything was OK. It was!

We will definitely be back - it was a great Sunday supper after a film at the UPP.
