With it's mid-range prices, this restaurant is neither a bargain nor a rip-off. My favourite dish is the Chicken Chow Mein; a relatively simple dish for a Chinese restaurant meaning my expectations had been heightened. Coming in at £5.50, it met my expectations and some. The oyster sauce and spring onion flavours were exciting and the texture had the correct blend for this dish. Although I prefer noodles, many people who go to this restaurant love to order a dish of 'Curry, Rice and Chips'. This offers the unique tastes of chip shop curry sauce on a generous portion of chips combined with an even larger serving of egg-fried rice. A true mixture of a British person's perception of authentic Chinese food and authentic English food. The vegetarian options at this establishment are also plentiful. They offer an enjoyable Tofu in Black Bean sauce among a variety of other dishes.
Even though the food which lands onto your plate is good, the environment leaves a lot to be desired. A food hygiene rating of 3 is supported by my observation of the kitchen, while the state of the toilets is not good. The ornaments and decor severely need maintenance meaning the overall pleasure of the experience diminishes. The speedy delivery of the serving onto your table is negated by the general lack of care throughout the restaurant.
To sum up Hong Kong House is functional. I believe it's safe to say I never walk out of Hong Kong House disappointed by the quality of the food, but I often find myself hoping that the owners put more emphasis on the hygiene and general service. I would recommend a trip to
